I like ruffles because they are silly. because they add movement to my dancer spirit's daily cha-cha. When ruffles first emerged on cuffs and collars during the Renaissance and became even more excessive on the elaborate dresses and doublets of the Baroque era. they signified a European man or woman's wealth and social standing, but around the cuffs, and hemlines of a Victorian woman's dress, they symbolized modesty and decorum.  Aren't we humans funny?

My shapely pirate wench ruffle skirts fall somewhere in between both ideals. Upcycled from - brocade, twill, knit, velvet, stretch cotton, and synthetic - fabric remnants, linens, home decor, and used clothing, these skirts add a touch of ridiculous excess AND femininity to any ordinary outfit.  Nothing is modest about their tie-dye, animal, floral, and boldly striped prints, nor their - mini in front to longer in back - graduating cut and sassy ruffle hemlines. They are homemade, one of a kind, and perfectly imperfect.
